Prebiotics vs Probiotics: Inside and Out

When it comes to prebiotics vs probiotics, I’m a firm believer that when these are used in conjunction, both topically and orally, remarkable skin benefits can be seen. Probiotics (particularly those found in food) are buzzwords at the forefront of health and wellness conversations. You may already be aware that they live in your favourite kombucha or yoghurt, and aid with digestion.


Prebiotics vs Probiotics – What Is the Difference?

Probiotics are live microorganisms which can prove beneficial to many bodily processes. To put it simply, they are ‘good’ bacteria, and have powerful healing qualities which have been used for centuries. As well as being commonly found in fermented foods and some yeasts, probiotics also occur naturally in our gastrointestinal system and on the surface of our skin.

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are less prominent in both general knowledge and research. They are indigestible carbohydrates which are the ‘food source’ of probiotics, keeping them active and functioning optimally. Prebiotics promote the growth and stimulation of helpful bacteria in the gut and are found in fibre-dense foods.


When probiotics are combined with prebiotics, they have a synergistic effect which has been shown to aid both the gut and skin’s natural reaction against inflammation and allergens, while also increasing skin’s moisture levels and elasticity. This results in healthier, younger looking skin – yay! So, rather than thinking about prebiotics vs probiotics, we should instead look at these two as best friends, working alongside each other to improve our skin’s appearance.


The Gut-Skin Link:

The human microbiome is composed of microorganisms and genetic material which microbes live on within the body. Both your gastrointestinal system and your skin have their very own microbiomes, and there is now a strong scientific suggestion of a link between the two.
