Marine Collagen vs Bovine Collagen

  • Collagen
  • Marine Collagen vs Bovine Collagen

Marine collagen vs bovine collagen, what is the difference? This is a question that I get quite often from clients. My previous blog about marine collagen explained about the process we use to create collagen at Au Natural Skinfood, and why we opted for the Marine collagen. In this post I aim to explain a bit more about the difference between Marine collagen and Bovine collagen.

Talking of marine collagen, It’s back! Our best-selling Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder is now available! Kelly Hoey has no wrinkles at age 55, and she swears by this life-changing trick for producing collagen after 30. Read more in this She Finds article.

I wholeheartedly agree with Kelly and I am very grateful for her support of Au Natural Skinfood’s Hair.Skin.Nails Collagen powder. Thank you to all our customers who put their collagen powder on backorder. These backorders are all filled now!

I worked many years working closely with problem skins in our clinics. During this time, I learnt early on that nutrition was one of the key contributors to skin presenting with problems. Our skin is often a mirror of our inner health. So when Au Natural Skinfood was still in the planning stages, we decided that we were not only on a mission to create chemical-free, zero-waste skincare; but we also wanted to generate a dietary supplement that could aid in repairing problematic and ageing skin, from the inside out.

With the help of a consulting physician, the two-year journey to developing our Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder began. We wanted a powder that would improve overall health, but more importantly, aid in the repair of problematic, ageing skin.

Why we chose Marine Collagen?

Initially, I was focused on creating a vegan collagen powder. However, I was quickly advised against this. It was because collagen is a protein found predominately in hair, skin, nails, bones, and ligaments. So for it to be effective, collagen is derived from animal sources like beef and fish. I want our members to know that I am committed to finding a good source of vegan collagen to add to our Au Natural Skinfood products, so watch this space! In the meantime, some scrumptious plant-based foods which are rich in key amino acids include: soy products, black beans, kidney beans, and legumes. If you like seeds, try pumpkin, squash, sunflower, and chia, and some flavourful, nutrient-rich nuts to add to your diet include pistachio, peanut, and cashew.

I started to notice a decrease in collagen in my own skin at about 32, when I had my fourth baby. It simply felt as though everything was starting to fall apart. I noticed that my skin lost elasticity, my joints became achy, and my digestive system was struggling. After following the advice of a homeopath, I introduced collagen to my diet and honestly, I haven’t looked back since. I had no idea that collagen works as a superglue to hold our bodies together. It is the most abundant protein in our bodies, not only responsible for keeping our bones and joints healthy, but it also helps to build muscle mass and improve our skin’s appearance. The fact that my hair and nails grew faster and were stronger and healthier was simply a bonus!

The next step for Au Natural Skinfood was to look for an ethical, sustainable source for collagen powder, and to test it on people with both problem and ageing skin. Over a 6-month period, our staff, friends, and family completed a voluntary trial. We had half of the group following our chemical free skincare routine, and the other half doing the exact same, but adding a daily dose of our Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder. The results were honestly overwhelming! Those taking the collagen powder showed significantly more improvement in their hair, skin, and nails over those who did not take the collagen.

With this knowledge, and the help of a physician, I have developed a collagen powder that includes amazing, hard-working ingredients. Among these ingredients are premium fish collagen (harvested using sustainable aquaculture practices), vitamin C (which aids in collagen absorption), New Zealand manuka honey (which fights off infection and is fantastic for restoring gut microbiome), and lastly, New Zealand grape seed extract (renowned for reducing oxidative stress, its anti-inflammatory response, helping to inhibit infectious growth, and support an ageing brain).

Marine collagen vs Bovine – what’s the difference?

The million dollar question! Why do we use premium fish collagen and not collagen from beef or pork? For me, this choice was a simple but fact based one – fish collagen consists of smaller peptides than bovine sources and, consequently, is 1.5 times more easily digested and distributed into our bodies. As a bonus, fish collagen dissolves so much faster into your favourite drink than a bovine collagen will.

Au Natural Skinfood’s Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder is a Type 1 collagen, which is extremely similar to human collagen, making it the obvious choice to top up your body’s collagen needs. Bovine collagen does contain Type 1 collagen, but in small amounts. It mostly consists of Type 3 collagen, which is much less powerful than Type 1.

Our Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder will protect your skin against photoaging by repairing existing skin collagen and elastin fibres, improving moisture retention, and encouraging hyaluronic acid content. Although bovine collagen has been shown to improve collagen content, it has not shown to have any significant effect on skin moisture levels.

Environmentally, it goes without saying that fish collagen is so much better for our shared habitat than other types of collagen. More than 10 million tons of fish product is discarded annually during processing, so using this excess to make collagen just makes sense. What’s even better is that fish proteins release far less greenhouse gas emissions than most meat products. Whilst beef by-products and cowhides are readily available and very cheap to produce, sourcing them plays a negative role in climate change.

Au Natural Skinfood’s Hair.Skin.Nails. Collagen Powder is a nutricosmetic – beauty that starts beneath the surface, with a focus on delivering healthy hair, skin, and nails. This powder will help to repair damaged, ageing skin, and is designed to support Au Natural Skinfood’s products to rebuild your skin through a hand-holding approach. Au Natural’s collagen powder comes in environmentally kind, home compostable packaging and its production is fully traceable and sustainable.
