Thick, thin and aging skin

Our skin ages differently depending on many things including environmental, genetics, harsh skincare/make up, unbalanced nutrition, smoking, sun exposure and more. Lets take a look at how our skin ages.

Thinner skin, fine lines, sagging and wrinkles can be the first visible signs of ageing and illness are often the first signs of aging. Unfortunately, light-skinned and blue-eyed people seem to show more visible signs of ageing earlier that dark-skinned and dark-eyed people.

How does our skin age?

Our skin is very complex and has many layers: The three main ones are the epidermis (top layer), the dermis (middle layer) and the subcutaneous (inner layer).  Each layer is comprised of connective tissue with collagen fibers to give support and elastin fibers to provide flexibility and strength.

Our epidermis will start to thin before other layers in our skin. The pigment-containing cells start to decrease, while the few pigment cells left behind increase in size and become larger age spots and tend to appear in areas that have been previously exposed to the sun.  Skin starts to look thin, clearer and paler.  The skin’s strength and elasticity start to reduce, initially in sun exposed areas, and for people like farmers who spend a considerable amount of time outdoors, their skin may start to look leathery.

Our blood vessels in our dermis become more fragile, resulting in bleeding under the skin with a bruise-like appearance.  As we age, our sebaceous glands produce less oil which results in dry, itchy skin.  Our sweat glands produce less sweat making it harder for our skin to regulate its own temperature and this, with our fat layers thinning, greatly increases the risk of skin injury and infection.

As we age, it is likely that we will have less sense to touch, pressure, vibration, heat, and cold.  Ageing skin repairs itself up to 4 times slower than younger skin. Lowered immunity and medications can further slow healing and increase aging.  Good nutrition and adequate fluids are essential for skin health and healing. Dehydration increases the risk of skin injury. A tip for all ageing skins is a moist skin is more comfortable and will heal more quickly.
