Healthy Skin NEEDS Manuka Honey – Here’s Why

  • Healthy Skin NEEDS Manuka Honey – Here’s Why

Manuka honey is one of Au Natural Skinfood’s hero ingredients! It helps to reduce acne scarring and fine lines and wrinkles, while moisturizing the skin.

What is Manuka Honey – And Where Does It Come From?

Native to New Zealand, Manuka honey has extremely strong antibacterial properties. This explains why Manuka honey is widely used in medical care for healing wounds. It’s also proven that the honey’s antibacterial properties can both fight infection and help repair and rejuvenate skin cells, allowing the tissue to heal effectively.

Manuka honey is both antimicrobial and antiviral. It is also an antioxidant, meaning that while it can ward off infections, it can also help to increase vitality and immunity, particularly in the skin. Basically, it’s a superstar ingredient – we love it!

In recent years, the world has been let in on a secret that New Zealanders have known about for generations: the effectiveness of Manuka honey. It’s not just a delicious, nutritious food, but an incredible infection-fighting, health-boosting medical and wellness product.

What is UMF Manuka Honey Rating?

UMF stands for ‘Unique Manuka Factor’. The UMF number indicates the level of the unique Manuka properties within the honey. The higher the number, the purer the honey. Methylglyoxal (MGO) is one of the four unique signature compounds measured in the UMF testing process.

Our independent scientific research shows that 16+ Active Manuka Honey enhances skin cell renewal by more than 80% compared to other natural skincare products.

That’s why we’ve included it in many of our products, along with other beautifully natural, nourishing ingredients.

Au Natural Skinfood relies on the hard work of bees to produce our Manuka honey-rich products. Living for just a short six weeks in the summer and four to six months in the winter, each bee only produces 1/12 a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. Collectively, however, a hive makes enough honey to not only support itself over winter, but also to have a little extra which beekeepers can harvest for food – and for skincare!

Our apiarist Will Silibourne is from Whitestone Ridge in Oamaru in the South Island of New Zealand. He’s passionate about bees – he perhaps loves them more than he loves people!

Manuka bees collect nectar and pollen from flowering Manuka bushes native to New Zealand. Whilst carrying the collected nectar back to the hive, they break down the complex sucrose of the nectar into two simple sugars: fructose and glucose. Tucking it neatly into a honeycomb cell, the bees then beat their wings over the newly gathered nectar to thicken it. When complete, the honeybees cap the cell with beeswax, sealing in the perfected Manuka honey.

You can rest assured that our bees remain unharmed in the making of our Au Natural Skinfood products – in fact they are treated like rock stars and given the very best environment to live and thrive off! We source our active 16+ Manuka honey from local apiaries who use ethical and sustainable practices. Their hives are placed in native vegetation free of GMO’s and pesticides, and the beekeepers must leave enough honey and pollen for the bees to feed on until the next season.

Can I Use Manuka Honey On My Skin?

Yes! With its amazing healing, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, Manuka honey is suitable for all skin types. By eliminating bad bacteria and stimulating good bacteria on the skin, the natural barrier function of our skin is strengthened. This allows our skin to repair compromised areas and to fight environmental damage, all on it’s own.
